Becoming best friends with our Mother, Mary, in 33 days

I consecrated myself to Jesus through Mary during Mass on the Marian Feast of the Queenship of Mary on August 22, 2019. It was extra special because it was our first official Parish Feast Day and we had participated in the Queenship of Mary Novena that week with the people of the parish. There were nine of us who consecrated ourselves that day at Mass, a very special day for us all.

At first, I wondered how I could commit myself so completely to Mary. I always thought you should only go to God for everything. Why would I need a middle man or lady? Now I have a different way of thinking.

Let’s take a look at the Wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11). Did they go to Jesus first to tell them that they had no wine? No, they went to the Blessed Mother. She is the one who went to Jesus. There is another example that comes to mind, when Jesus gave us His mother at the Crucifixion (John 19:26-27). He loves His mother and wants to share her with us.

As the nine of us met to learn about the consecration process, we laughed a lot, shed a tear now and then and built up strong friendships with each other and, most importantly, with Mary. I realized that Mary always points us to Her Son. She takes what meager offerings I may have for Jesus and makes them perfect. How awesome it is to entrust myself to her care and protection knowing that I am honoring Jesus. He gave Mary to me and me to Mary; I am her child.

As mariners are guided into port by the shining of a star, so Christians are guided to heaven by Mary.

St. Thomas Aquinas

How did we do it? Through a program called “33 Days to Morning Glory” from the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. During the 33 Days program, our small group met once a week. We watched a short video together and had awesome discussions afterwards. Each day between our meetings, there were reading assignments in the program book and questions to help us dive deeper into ourselves and our understanding of Mary’s role in our lives.

In times like these, my journey through the 33 Days program has allowed me to turn much of my fears, sorrows, and worries over to Mary with all the faith that she will take care of everything as God wills. Notice that I wrote “much” and not “all.” That’s because I, like you, am a work in progress. I continue to learn, grow, and renew my consecration.

I invite you to explore more deeply what it means to have Mary as your mother and meet others who wish to do the same. Start on a new journey and learn more about your faith. There is going to be a new group forming soon to do the “33 Days to Morning Glory” program. To learn more about the program before that time, visit All Hearts Afire or to view the videos, log in to Formed.
