Education Commission

Notes from October 5, 2023 Meeting 

Those present at the meeting were Michele Haggerty, Mel Graessle, Karri Brauman,  Karen Blevins, Kelly Hamrin, and Linda Bukalski. 

Opening Prayer: Karen Blevins shared a prayer designed especially for church meetings. 

Parish Religious Education Director Report:  FFF director gave details concerning the following topics:   

        *We will again apply for the Fr. James Offutt parish grant.

        ​​*There is a large number of students who are in need of making up sacraments. Plans are currently being discussed in order to make that happen for those in need to be celebrated at Easter.

*There are families still registering their children for FFF classes on Wednesday evenings. 

*There is an Advent Adventure being planned after 5:00 Mass until 9:00 p.m. on December 9. There will be a light meal provided for students staying at church while their parents enjoy a night out Christmas shopping. This event will include several different stations celebrating Advent. This is planned for students grades K-6 with our youth group assisting. Stations include Advent Wreath, Ornaments, Storytelling, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Straw and Crib activity, and St. Lucy Feast Day. A short movie is also planned.  More details to follow in the bulletin. 

*NCYC update: in the future, it will be expected for students attending to help pay for the cost of the trip with fundraising efforts. Also, it is expected now and in the future for attendees to regularly attend Wednesday evening FFF gatherings.  

Adult Faith Formation: Michele shared the following on behalf of Barb Steinman:

        *Hearts Afire next study-working on plans now.

        *White House Retreat-8 attended and 10 are already registered for next year.

        *The Educ Commission core team has a limit of 3 years: Karen Blevins’ term is up for renewal, and she volunteered to continue serving. 

        *The Parish Scholarship-the application has been updated and is ready for distribution on the website and in the bulletin.

        *Grateful Living Groups Part 2 – this 6 week study can begin as early as Oct. 23 and runs for 6 weeks. There will be signups for new registrants to join an established group.

        *The welcome event for new parishioners sponsored by The Social Concerns Commission will be held after 5:00 pm Mass on October 21st.  The Social Concerns Commission will provide the main entree for the meal and various commissions will provide other items.  At the dinner, there will be a hand out with the different commissions, groups, etc from our church. The Education Commission will be represented by Michele Haggerty. 

Family Life: Karri Brauman shared the October 21, 2023 wedding is all set and taken care of with Mel Graessle taking the lead.  

Formed.org and Library:  Kelly Harmin mentioned she will get more information to the parishioners concerning audio books on formed.org. There are talks, daily reflections, and good quality videos on formed.org. The commission is going to make more of an effort to promote its various resources. It was suggested we place a formed.org program on the TV in fellowship hall before masses to draw attention to its programing.  

Renewal Movement: Mel Graessle mentioned the WELCOME retreat planning for the fall retreat (November 4 & 5) is on target and there will be representatives from the formation team speaking at Masses. Monsignor Mak has enlisted the assistance of an experienced formation team from OLOL to assist in getting a Welcome event at his church in Kirksville. It is scheduled for April 20 & 21, 2024. The Advent by Candlelight (ABC) event will return on December 5 with a celebrated guest speaker. Arise Women’s Ministry from Jeff City is hosting an event entitled Seasons of Christmas Nov. 28 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Peter’s Selinger Center. There is a $5 donation at the door; watch the bulletin for more information. 

New Evangelization: Linda Bukalski had a variety of book options for us to look over and consider ordering for parishioners for Advent.  The Matthew Kelly book entitled Beautiful Eucharist was chosen. 

OCIA and Catechists: It was reported that one OCIA participant and their sponsor are currently attending classes on Wednesday evenings.

Parish Council Report: Linda Adams shared that our church will have a Parish Mission occuring during the evenings of December 9-13.  A visiting priest is leading this. She also shared prayer cards were placed on the St. Michael statue in the church and Father Penn commissioned three new members to the Administration Commission. 

The meeting ended with prayer; next meeting is Thursday, November 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the library.  Linda Adams is the designated prayer leader and Karri Brauman will be the hospitality host. There will be no meeting in December.
