Family Faith Formation

August 3, 2025, Michele Haggerty

We all know that old saying “You can’t take it with you.” In this week’s Gospel, that is one point that Jesus is making through this parable. Even more basic than that, we might find ourselves wanting things but not necessarily needing them.  The cost of those wants may be exactly what would enable someone to furnish the needs of those with lower means. So often in the gospels Jesus is asking us to trust in Him and leave behind the material things we have acquired. He doesn’t expect us to live in a cave with nothing but the clothes on our backs. However, He does ask that we critically look at the things we have that may distract us from spending time with Him. For me, it’s my phone. There are many things on my phone that are truly needs. For instance, it keeps constant monitor of my blood sugar; provides directions to a location with which I am not familiar; keeps an instant line of communication with loved ones. Here are the wants that get in my way: I spend precious time scrolling through reels on Facebook or Instagram. I have or should I say “had” games that I would at times play in the wee hours of the night. Those have been deleted. But even then, it was after several “one more day” promises.

Family Challenge: So, this week as your Family Challenge, take some time to discuss as a family what wants we have that distract us from spending time with the Lord. The goal is for each family member to take one item and stow it away for the week. Then, take the time that you would have been using on that item and spend it with God. At the end of the week, share the results with your family members.

Upcoming Events

  • Sunday, August 10 – Donut Sunday/Youth Sunday after 8:00 and 10:00 Masses. ALL YOUTH get a FREE Donut! Donations help defray the cost of sending our high school youth to National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in November.
  • Wednesday, August 13 – The Queenship Novena will be in lieu of XLT Adoration from 6:00-7:00 (after 5:30 Mass) in the church. This is for the whole parish family!!
  • Saturday, August 16 – Supper with the Saints after 5:00 Mass. Sign up in Fellowship Hall. Pick a saint whose feast day is in the month of July and then come up with a dish that will be shared potluck style that represents that saint. For example, St. Joseph could be Sloppy Joe’s or since many Sicilians believe that St. Joseph is their patron saint, you could make an Italian dish. Please be prepared to share a few facts about the saint that you selected. This is open to all parishioners! It promises to be a fun community builder. Since this month is in conjunction with the Queenship Novena, we will be offering appetizers and desserts after the Novena. Please plan to stay and learn a little something about the Saints! We have such a good time listening to what saints have been selected and why.
  • Wednesday, September 3 – FFF Registration and BBQ from 6:00-7:30 in Bestgen Hall. This will follow the 5:30 Mass in the church.
  • Wednesday, September 10 – First night of FFF classes for K-12.
