Second Sunday of Advent, December 7, 2025

I have found myself in the predicament on many occasions of making a wrong turn and as a result traveling in the wrong direction toward what I had hoped would be my final destination, but is not that at all. This can happen very innocently. And, unfortunately, I keep going in that direction thinking it is the “right way” and that I will eventually arrive at my destination. Not so!! What eventually happens is that I have to swallow my pride, pull over at a gas station, and ask directions. If I am going to turn around and head in the correct direction, it’s going to take some humility.
In many ways that’s what John the Baptist is speaking saying to us in the Gospel account for this second weekend of Advent 2025. He uses the word “repent;” which in its simplest form means “turn around.” He uses it to describe any of us who have made the wrong choices in life, short term and long term, and turned away from God, His laws, the teachings of His Son and His Church, and started traveling down the road of life away from Him. It’s called sin….wrong decisions and choices in life that take us in the wrong direction. And we need to stop, pull over, repent, and get back on the right track. In the midst of all the craziness of this very spiritual Season called Christmas, gift yourself with something very special, something Jesus actually has given us as an eternal gift, the Grace you receive in the Sacrament of Reconciliation! It is the Sacrament of “turning around,” and “getting back on the right track” toward your heavenly destination. Don’t let pride get in the way of doing some good ole “repentance” for your soul. Check the bulletin for weekly times for confession, and also for the list of Parish Advent Communal Penance Services in our area. God bless! -Msgr. Greg
